A Powerful Partnership with Purpose

Tempe, AZ – Where Collaboration is Making and Impact

Last week, the School of Music, Dance and Theatre at Arizona State University hosted a truly special evening at Katzin Hall, honoring Free Guitars 4 Kids (FG4K) for its impactful work bringing music to youth in the juvenile justice system. The concert featured outstanding performances by guitar students from both ASU and Glendale Community College, showcasing a wide range of musical talent through chamber ensembles and a stirring guitar orchestra.

But the night was about more than music—it was a celebration of community, second chances, and the transformative power of the arts.

A Powerful Partnership with Purpose

ASU’s decision to recognize Free Guitars 4 Kids stems from a unique and deeply meaningful collaboration with the Maricopa County Durango Juvenile Detention Center. In partnership with ASU’s music program and FG4K, a guitar club was launched within the facility to offer incarcerated youth an opportunity to learn, create, and grow through music.

“At ASU, we believe music has the power to heal, connect, and uplift,” said Dr. Martha Masters, Associate Professor of Music at ASU. “Partnering with Free Guitars 4 Kids and the Durango Juvenile Detention Center allows our students to use their talents to make a real difference in young lives. This program doesn’t just teach guitar—it restores hope, dignity, and possibility.”

The program’s success has been profound, inspiring an expansion to include youth on probation, reaching even more kids outside the walls of the facility.

An Unforgettable Visit

During his visit to Arizona, FG4K Executive Director Ben Dudley and Communications Manager, Christina Garber,  made a stop at the Durango Juvenile Detention Center, where they was surprised with a custom-made guitar gifted in appreciation of FG4K’s ongoing support. In a heartfelt moment, Ben was asked to perform for the kids—sharing an original song and a lively rendition of “Johnny B. Goode”by the late, great Chuck Berry. The performance lit up the room and served as a powerful reminder of how music can inspire connection and joy, even in the most difficult places.

Voices That Matter

At the ASU concert, staff from the juvenile center spoke about their work, giving the audience firsthand insight into the lives being impacted by this partnership. Their commitment to the youth under their care—and the broader vision of rehabilitation through creative expression—was met with sincere appreciation from the community in attendance.

Continuing the Mission

Free Guitars 4 Kids is honored to be a part of this ongoing work and remains committed to providing instruments, support, and encouragement to young people navigating the justice system. The organization will continue to stand alongside ASU and the Durango team to ensure that music remains a bridge to healing and transformation.

A heartfelt thank-you to Arizona State University for hosting such a meaningful event—and for sharing in the mission of hope, creativity, and change.
