The Aloha Jam: Celebrating Music and Connection in Hawaiʻi

How 1,500 students across five islands found their voices through music, storytelling, and community.

By now you might have heard that at Free Guitars 4 Kids, we believe a single instrument can be the start of a lifelong song. This belief recently took us to the beautiful classrooms of Hawaiʻi for the second annual Hoʻolōkahi Lyrics Writing Challenge—and the results were nothing short of magic.

Honoring the Heart of the Classroom

It was a profound honor for us to see how these teachers have so thoughtfully woven Hawaiʻi’s rich, vibrant culture into their daily lessons. We are constantly moved by the way music becomes a bridge between tradition and the next generation. While we get to play a small part by providing the instruments, the real joy is witnessing the kids exude pure happiness as they discover the magic of making music and singing together. There is something truly special about a room full of students finding their collective voice and realizing that they have a story worth telling.

Strengthening the Fabric of Community

Our mission is built on the idea that we don't need to create new systems; we just need to strengthen the ones that already exist. That’s why we were so honored to partner with LŌKAHI: The Ukulele Collective. They are doing the hard, beautiful work of empowering teachers—many of whom had never picked up a ukulele before—to bring music directly to their students.

Watching this community come together across five islands was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. From Maui to Oʻahu, 1,500 students at 45 different schools learned "The Aloha Jam" and wrote their own heartfelt lyrics.

Celebrating Our Young Musicians

To keep that music playing long after the challenge ends, FG4K was thrilled to award 30 ukuleles to each of the top three schools:

  • 1st Place: Kula Elementary School (Maui)

  • 2nd Place: Kohala Elementary School (Hawaiʻi Island)

  • 3rd Place: Wahiawā Elementary School (Oʻahu)

Congratulations to the students and the incredible teachers who guided them! Seeing the joy on the faces of the 4th graders at Kula Elementary during their visit from Paula Fuga reminded us that a "transformational gift" is about much more than wood and strings—it’s about the confidence to create.

A Heartfelt Mahalo

None of this is possible without collaboration. We want to extend a massive thank you to the teachers who took a leap of faith to lead these lessons, the students who shared their hearts through lyrics, and the team at LŌKAHI for being such incredible organizational partners.

When a community plays together, it builds a "sound of hope" that ripples far beyond the classroom. We are so grateful to have been a part of your story this year.
